Design and Technology
At Hollickwood, we believe that Design and Technology plays an integral part in our day to day lives and is of ever increasing importance in our local and global communities.
Our Design and Technology curriculum provides opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the designed and made world in which we all live and work as well as to celebrate creativity and innovation. This enables our children to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and their nation.
At Hollickwood we adhere to the National Curriculum with guidance from the Design and Technology Association. This includes specific skills that DT develops and the technical vocabulary needed for an in depth study. Children develop the following Design and Technology skills as they progress through the school:
- Design
- Make
- Evaluate
- Technical knowledge
- Cooking and Nutrition
Our Curriculum Intent, which takes into account the school, local, national and global needs, is embedded throughout our Design and Technology curriculum:
Experiences and Opportunities
Through enriching learning opportunities, we aim to provide children with tangible, relevant and memorable experiences that support in acquiring, developing and extending their knowledge and understanding of the designing, making and innovating processes and industry in Great Britain and around the world. Through this, we aim to support children to develop their designing and making skills, solve real and relevant problems and prepare them to contribute in the rapidly changing technologies around them.
Inclusion
All pupils will have equal access to the DT curriculum and a high quality, coherent and progressive experience of DT. Learning ability, physical ability, linguistic ability, gender, ethnicity and/or cultural circumstances will not impede pupils from accessing DT lessons.
Hollickwood is committed to teaching our children to respect, accept and celebrate the diversity and difference that exists in our society. Our ethos, culture and curriculum reflects communities and is proactive in promoting belonging and community accountability.
Cognitive rich
Our enquiry based curriculum enables children to explore the nature of design and technology and its place in the world around them. It provokes questions, challenges, encourages reflection and stimulates thinking skills. Such skills are vital in ensuring children are prepared for their future. It also teaches children how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable, preparing them for adult life, employment and life-long learning
Mental Health and Well-being
At Hollickwood School, all children in all key stages will be taught DT as an integral part of their personal, social and emotional learning. We are committed to supporting wellbeing for all and encouraging children to develop their sense of identity and belonging in a multi-cultural society whilst enabling them to combat prejudice and discrimination. We aim to promote pupils’ imaginative, creative and personal, social and emotional development so they can flourish individually within their own communities, and as citizens in a plural society and the global community
