Joke Competition

On Wednesday 2nd March I attended a joke competition at the House of Parliament. There were 19 schools competing and 20 children. A boy from Wales won with his joke about potatoes! He won a party bag, an iPad mini and a trophy. My joke was: “Why did the elf get a phone for Christmas? Because he wanted to take elfies!”It was on amazing opportunity ! By Paris, Year 6

Attendance

Thank you to all parents/carers who have phoned in to report their child’s absence over the last few weeks.

Unfortunately attendance is still below the expected 96% and it MUST be improved. Children who are 96% and below are not reaching their educational potential and therefore missing a substantial part of their learning.

We know children become ill but a mild running nose should not prevent your child from missing school.

Holidays will not be authorised .Taking children out of education during term-time for a family holiday is not acceptable and will not be authorised. If you do decide to take your child on holiday you’ll be issued with a fixed penalty notice from Barnet Council. Term absence will only be authorised where there are exceptional circumstances.

We look forward to attendance figures improving.

Matilda Workshop

Tulip class had an amazing time at The Cambridge Theatre on Wednesday. We worked with a lady from the Royal Shakespeare company in a Matilda workshop, as if we were actually rehearsing for the show! We learned about using our voice, bodies and working in a team to create different dramatic effects. It was so much fun! We even had time to sit and eat our lunch listening to some classical music in Covent Garden. What a fabulous day!

Barnet Poetry Competition

Jamie, who amongst other children from year 3 entered Barnet Poetry Competition, received a commendation for his poem from the judge, Katherine Gallagher. He attended the prizegiving at The Bull Theatre in Barnet on Saturday 5th March, where he met the judge, received the certificate and had a chance to present his poem.

Rocket Science!

Our school is going to participate in a national Rocket Science Experiment. This has been organised by the Royal Horticulture Society and the UK Space Agency. The aim is to compare the growth of seeds which have been into space, with seeds which remained on Earth. The purpose is to find out if conditions in space make it possible for food to grow.

If you would like to see Tim Peake with the seeds, while orbiting the Earth, on the International Space Station, then please follow this link. https://principia.org.uk/activity/rocketscie nce/

The seeds returned to Earth at 04:26am on Tuesday 2nd March. Commander Scott Kelly of NASA and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov of Roscosmos landed safely back on Earth in Kazakhstan. The seeds then travelled with Scott Kelly to NASA in Houston on a charter flight from Moscow, Russia and returned to the UK on Thursday. They are now being packed up so they can be sent to schools like ours, which have been accepted to participate in the Rocket Science experiment. They will arrive in school in April.

It is exciting and inspiring to take part in a ground breaking, innovative science experiment!

We will keep you posted on whether the seeds grow successfully!

Tim Peake has asked thousands of schools to grow seeds that have journeyed through space.

We are delighted to announce that Foxtons are sponsoring our Hollickwood Summer Fair on Saturday 25th June, 12-3. They will be donating £500 to our school as part of the Charity Fundraising Boards scheme. In return, we need to provide 40 addresses where boards (advertising Foxtons and our fair) can be placed in June. Class reps may approach you, asking for your permission for Foxtons to put up board at home address. Please do support this scheme and help raise money for our school!

Easter Raffle

Cactus class will hold an Easter Raffle on Wednesday 23rd March at 3:20pm in the playground. You will be able to buy the raffle tickets from Christina, Y6 class rep in the playground from next Monday.

Easter Egg Hunt

All children will be participating in a free Easter Egg Hunt during the school day on Tuesday 29th March, thanks to Friends of Hollickwood. We will be making the most of our unique playground and garden areas, giving the children a brilliant excuse to get really close up to nature as they hunt for those chocolate treats! The Friends will ensure that there is an egg for every child, but more eggs means more fun, so we would also be grateful for any donations of eggs from parents - please leave these at the office in advance of 29th. We would also welcome help from parents to supervise this lovely event - please speak to Linden (Tilia Y3, Victor R), or Lenka in the office.

Girls Football

The girls football team met in a match with Church Hill School yesterday. Here is the summary of the game: “We were very nervous as it was our first game but we managed to score a goal within five minutes. Katie rocketed the ball into the back of the net. Our super goal keeper and amazing defense stopped many goals and tackled well. The awesome midfield and striker blasted many shots at goal. Despite Church Hill winning 3-1 we enjoyed the game and had fun.”
